Estimation of the Anisotropy of Electric Conductivity via B1 Mapping
نویسندگان
چکیده
Introduction: The electric conductivity can potentially be used as diagnostic information due to its ability to reflect the grade of tissue damage (see, e.g., [1]). In its general form, the conductivity is given by a rank-2 tensor, including anisotropic cases of conductivity. In vivo, anisotropic conductivities can be found in tissue with preferred cell direction, e.g., in muscles and nerves [2]. Measuring anisotropy of the tissue conductivity, characterizing the underlying cell structure, might increase diagnostic information. The recently presented “Electric Properties Tomography” (EPT) is able to determine tissue conductivity in vivo by post-processing B1 maps [3]. This study investigates the ability of EPT to estimate also the anisotropy of the conductivity. Theory: Tissue conductivity σ and permittivity ε can be estimated via [3] (H/E the magnetic/electric field, ω the Larmor frequency)

PURPOSE: The capacity to measure conductivity and conductivity anisotropy in vivo and non-invasively has practical significance in a number of biomedical applications. For example, large changes of tissue conductivity have been reported in tumors, strokes and myocardial infarction. Considerable early efforts were focused on the measurement of injected low-frequency currents (1-3). Electric prop...

Anisotropic electrical properties can be found in biological tissues such as muscles and nerves. Conductivity tensor is a simplified model to express the effective electrical anisotropic information and depends on the imaging resolution. The determination of the conductivity tensor should be based on Ohm's law. In other words, the measurement of partial information of current density and the el...

Introduction Tissue permittivity might serve as diagnostic parameter, e.g., for oncology [1]. However, the diagnostic use of the permittivity is significantly hampered by the lack of suitable methods to determine the permittivity in vivo. A possible approach for the determination of permittivity in vivo is given by analyzing the B1 map in the framework of standard MRI, called "Electric Properti...

Introduction: Tissue conductivity and permittivity are critical to estimating local RF power deposition during MR imaging. These electrical properties may also have diagnostic value as malignant tissue types have been shown to have higher permittivity and conductivity than surrounding healthy tissue . In this work, we explore rapid estimation of electrical properties that will prove to be usefu...
